Along the Oodnadatta Track - the Algebucina Bridge, the longest South Australian bridge, built for the "Afghan Express", nicknamed "Ghan" in 1923 by one of its crew.

The Australian outback is known for its dry climate, but when it rains some hundreds of kilometers away up country, it can create great floods and bridges need to be able to cope with the deluge.

Above - Cooper's Creek Bridge on the Diamantina Developmental Road, East of Windorah. The bridge was under water in February this year. Right - Diamantina River, West of Windorah, this one was also under water isolating the town for 6 weeks.
We cross the Georgina River, South of Boulia the "Dutch way"
One of many bridges constructed for the original "Ghan" running from Adelaide to Alice. Construction commenced in 1878 and was completed 1929. It ceased to operate in 1980 when the new Ghan to the West was completed.
